Find the rhythm as you hit the dance floor
Don’t expect yourself to bust out a step up routine as soon as you step onto the dance floor. This is not a movie! Start small — really small — just by banging your head. Do this before you hit the dance floor. Think of it this way: Music is something that lubricates the whole experience of being in a club. It sets the mood as soon as you walk out, as you walk. You have to get comfortable with the music first. So start a conversation with the music right away. You can listen and nod your head whether you’re having your drink, hanging out with a friend, or even sitting. It’s an easy way to set yourself up for success on the dance floor before you even start dancing. Your body already has control over the rhythm, so you’ll be more likely to stay on the beat as long as you don’t move your legs.
Start with a small boom/groove
Once you’re on or near the dance floor, start bouncing with your entire body. Think of this hoop as a larger version of your head bob. You’re still going in the same rhythm, but now with your knees, core, and chest. You know how a kid jumps on his knees when he hears a song of his choice? Like that, but not as jerk-y. Rest peacefully in those bounces, then slowly build up your energy. It helps to make your dance more natural.
Learn simple steps
Got a handle on music? Great. Jumping with your body? the inspection. Now let’s move our feet! But wait — without some practice you won’t know which foot to step where. So learn some basic dance steps before going out to dance in a club.
Let loose
Now that you’ve learned the basics of dancing, it’s time to make sure you look comfortable and confident every step of the way. These quick tips will help you refine your dance so that you look more loose, scruffy, and comfortable:
Join the party
By this point, you have a handle on using Dance 1. On 2 beats with your whole body. 3. Steps. But you didn’t come to a club to dance alone! When you have that base, hit the dance floor with individuals around you. If you’re in a crowd or with a group of friends, you can mess with their antics and energy. Imitate your friends’ moves, lip sync with them, rap from memory an entire poem by Nicky in motor sport. And if the DJ or song tells you to do something (like raise your hand or jump), do it! These are the little things you can’t anticipate or practice — remember you’re out to have fun, not to play DDR on your mind. Grinding on someone (or whatever you call it) has its own subject — but whether you’re dancing with one person or a whole group of people, the most important thing is to… stay in the rhythm! You and your partner or friend may be doing completely different things. They’ll be jumping while you’re pumping your arms. She will be walking side by side while you are taking two steps. But as long as you are moving with the same beat, it will still feel like you are dancing together. However, the closer you get physically, the more likely you are to want your movements to be such that you don’t hit each other or create friction between your moves. Dance With Them I hope these tips help you say goodbye to those insecurities! Follow these 5 steps and you’ll realize that it is possible, and it is actually quite easy to dance in a club. All you need is the right resources, some practice, and confidence.
